Seiko NH35 (NH36) centre wheel and pinion replacement

Edit- added Revolut link and QR

A few months back, a friend of mine asked me to take a look at his watch which had a NH35 movement. He has complained that the manufacturer has not responded to him after he admitted that he had dropped the watch and now his minute and hour hands seems to be acting funny (always not align). The hands can varies from 10 mins to 30 mins out of alignment.

The NH35 (NH36) being a Seiko, is a hardy automatic movement, but as with any mechanical movement. The biggest enemy is impact ! It can throw the watch balance off-bank, break a gear pinion, …….etc etc , and cause all sort of issue.

I have encouraged him to just buy another NH35 movement and swap it since replacement is available economically and saves alot of time. But he prefer to have it repaired since the watch is only couple of months old and he is sure its just an adjustment issue. Anyway, he requested that it be dismantled and check out for damages.

I will not bored you with all the photos on dismantling but just jumped to the finding. Here it is :

The center wheel and pinion was found to have broke off !

Still can’t see the difference ? Here is a pix of the replacement wheel vs damage wheel.

Anyway, the NH35 center wheel and pinion is difference with the 7S, 4R and 6R (height) therefore they are not interchangable.
I can’t locate a replacement locally and therefore a new one has to be ordered. I hate to order parts from Japan as they needs a minimum-order-qty and takes forever to arrive.

After some discussion with my friend, he wanted the repair route. The center wheel and pinion part was ordered (as usual… needed 1 pc but i had purchase 10 pcs to make it economical). Anyway, it finally arrive after couple of months. Assembly took only like 30 minutes !

Now i have 9 pieces of spare center wheel and pinion ! They are suitable for NH35, NH36 and NH38 movement.

If anyone needs some, let me know.

Hello, I know this is a pretty old blog entry, but any chance you still have any the center wheel/cannon pinions. I know it’s not particularly cost effective to fix, but I hate having a broken movt on my bench.

Wow this is a great article thanks for posting it. When I was setting and installing my seconds hand I somehow broke off the center pinion. How hard was is to install this part? Do you think it’s jsut easier to purchase a new movement?

    1. Hi Darren, you need to dismantle the movement bridge (plate) behind. It’s not an easy job for novice. Better to swap a new movement.
