ETA a part of Swatch Group has decided to reduce its deliveries to third parties watch maker ; a decision made on 1st January in 2012. The consequences of that decision haven’t had been experienced till now. As a result of ETA’s decision supply of their movements has become scarce and prices have had increased considerably in market.
Many movement brokers had got confirmations of supply from ETA that simply got cancelled without notice and as a result prices in 2012 for ETA movements have increased over 70% in markets managed by movement brokers. Many other Swiss movement manufacturers had a difficulty responding to the demand creating market shortage and bump up the prices.
Swatch Group will cease ETA movement supply by 2019.
Ronda, another Swiss independent movement manufacturer, mainly known for their quartz movements, presented at the Baselworld the Mecano R150, a 25 jewel, 111/2’’’ automatic caliber, with three hands and date. If anyone knows how to make movements in large volumes, Ronda is in the best position to respond to the growing demand for Swiss mechanical movements ; since they are already selling millions of quartz movements every year !
This is probably one of the most important news from Baselworld 2016.
Ronda is aiming to produce 100,000 units per year, with a retail price of 60 CHF (about Usd62 at todays exchange rate). There is rumors that once the production gets carry over to Ronda’s Thai plant, the volume and price will be even more attractive !
This will be a good news to third parties watch maker and micro brand watch maker.
This announcement coincides with the 70th anniversary of Ronda. Founded in 1946 by William Mosset, the firm concentrated on the manufacture of components for other suppliers’ mechanical calibers, until it launched its own first mechanical watch movement onto the market in 1961. In the mid-70s, as the new quartz technology transformation swept in, Ronda decided to join this dynamic evolution, which opened the way to a rapidly expanding mass market. Later, as demand for mechanical watch movements continued to decline sharply, the company discontinued its production in this segment at the end of the 80s.
